John Edwards, with Ohio relatives anxiously watching, driving the #24 BMW took pole position for the Ohio-based Team RLL in the GT Le Mans class. Edwards was followed closely by Nick Tandy’s Porsche 911 RSR and Alexander Sims in the sister #25 BMW M8 GTE. Edwards’ best lap of 1:17.853 was good enough for pole by 0.066 seconds, and just 0.079 seconds ahead of Sims’ third-place time. Earl Bamber’s No. 912 Porsche and Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette Racing machine rounded out the top five, all within 0.261 seconds.
John Edwards: “I guess I had a little extra motivation for today, I haven’t been qualifying lately, you get used to watching. And then you have to do it again and you go ‘OK, I have to remember how to bring the tires in,’ and that’s a little difficult because in the race you go flat out from the beginning and maintain pace on the out lap. In qualifying you bring the tires in a different way.”
