The opening race of the 2019 VLN Championship at the Nurburgring was delayed and shortened to 2 hours 45 minutes due to heavy morning fog at the Eifel forest circuit.
John Edwards, driving the #99 Rowe Racing BMW M6 GT3 for the final stint took advantage of a superior pit strategy and cycled to the lead. He was closely pursued by Patrick Pilet in the Manthey-Porsche who drafted Edwards on the Dottinger Hohe straight to take the lead in the final minutes of the race. Edwards doggedly hung tight to Pilet for the remainder of the race. He perfectly timed a yellow to green flag racing transition on the last lap for a pass on Pilet and pulled away for the BMW victory.
The first BMW victory of the VLN race season of 2019 was delivered by Edwards along with his teammates Nick Catsburg and Marco Wittmann. The podium was rounded out by the third place finishing #98 Rowe Racing BMW M6 GT3 sister car, and pole sitter, driven by Mikkel Jensen, Tom Blomqvist and Conner De Phillippi.
