John did double-duty last weekend at Daytona International Speedway. He made his debut with Stevenson Motorsports in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge on Friday and also split time behind the wheel of the No. 70 SpeedSource Mazada RX-8 in the Rolex 24 at Daytona on Saturday and Sunday.
A blown right rear tire and a faulty alternator dropped the SpeedSource entry out of contention to repeat as the top Grand Touring class entry in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Worn and tattered (see photo left) the aerodynamically challenged #70 hung together until the end as Sylvain Tremblay, Jonathan Bomarito, Adam Christodoulou and John drove the car to a sixth place finish in GT. “It’s disappointing to go there and put all the effort in to finish sixth,” John said. “But at the same time you know there’s so much out of your control. But I think when the guys look back on the race they know that they were one of the best-prepared teams.”
John is teaming with Matt Bell in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge this season. Bell co-drove Doran Racing’s No. 77 Daytona Prototype in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. John said the Stevenson car was running toward the front of the GRAND-AM 200 when the rear axle broke. They finished 28th in the Grand Sport class. “We know we’ve got speed,” John said. “So I think we’ll definitely have some wins this year and be able to compete for the championship."
